Paragliding with a view of Lake Zell and the surrounding mountains

The Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See has been a secret tip among paragliders for a long time. And there’s plenty of reasons for that! From May onwards, fans of the sport can experience almost limitless flying pleasure. Not to mention the spectacular panoramic views: An incredible view of Lake Zell surrounded by more than 30 three-thousand-metre summits. What more could a paraglider’s heart desire?

Up the mountain and off you go! Free as a bird and high up above one of the most beautiful regions of the country: Discover the Schmitten in Zell am See – one of the most popular paragliding hotspots of the Austrian Alps!

Thermal uplift on the Schmitten

You would like to fly high and far? The excellent thermal uplift in Zell am See-Kaprun provides the perfect conditions for that. By the way, the best time for thermal and cross-country flying is from April to August. But: Flights are possible from February onwards and, thus, you can soar across the snowy winter landscape of the Pinzgau if you like.

What makes the thermal uplift surrounding the Schmitten so special? The strong uplift from the Südostkessel (“south-eastern cauldron”). That way you can enjoy a timely start – no matter the transregional wind direction.

Launching and landing in Zell am See

You can launch right from the summit in immediate vicinity of the chapel at 2,000 metres above sea level. The only way to get there is with the Porsche cable car. On the spacious meadows surrounding the summit, you can take your time unpacking your equipment and preparing for take-off.

There are also plenty of spots where you can land: at the meadow right by the Fürth-Kaprun railway crossing, on the Piesendorf landing site. You can head back to the cable car station either by bus, carpooling or the local railway "Pinzgauer Lokalbahn".
