Best Austrian summer cable cars

And the winner is: Schmittenhöhebahn!

Since 2005, the Schmittenhöhebahn is a full member of the “Beste Österreichische Sommer-Bergbahnen” (Best Austrian summer cable cars). 100 quality criteria and extraordinary family offers won the Schmitten the certification of “family mountain”. As if that wasn’t enough, Zell’s landmark mountain has also held the title of Austria’s first certified “art and culture mountain” since the summer of 2015. What does that entail? We’ve got the answer for you!

Full member since 2005

What does it mean to be a full member of the “Beste Österreichische Sommer-Bergbahnen”? The quality seal bestowed by Wirtschaftskammer Österreich (Austrian Federal Economic Chamber) stands for adventure offers quality-tested as part of strict and recurring controls. The Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See prides itself on always being among the best summer cable cars and strives to impress visitors time and again with improved offers.

Schmitten, the “family mountain”

Zell’s landmark and scenic-view mountain offers amazing excursions for families – as proven by its certification as a “family mountain”. Numerous child-friendly adventure offers invite you to spend varied and action-packed moments with your kids. Another highlight for all generations: the ride up to the Schmittenhöhe’s summit at 2,000 metres in the unique Porsche Design cable cars. No matter your age, it’s always impressive to float towards a stunning mountain setting of more than 30 three-thousand-metre summits.

Once you’re up on the Schmittenhöhe, you can walk past quaint wooden sculptures, a marmot cave and a beehive on the High Altitude Promenade. That’s how the little ones can playfully learn about the Pinzgau region’s nature and its inhabitants. On Schmidolin’s Baptism of Fire adventure trail, young hikers can test their courage and motor skills at various play stations. Another action-packed highlight is Schmidolin’s Rocket Bike: a dragontastic motocross course that kids can conquer on electric motocross bikes.

Austria’s first “art and culture mountain”

Not just families love to visit the Schmitten – art and culture fans do too! And there’s a good reason for that because Zell’s landmark mountain is Austria’s first “art and culture mountain”. Thanks to the “Art on the Mountain” project, you can visit Europe’s biggest open-air exhibition area right amidst the Salzburger Land region. A visit to history-laden Elisabeth Chapel is always worth a visit as well.

A special art folder summarises the 30+ oversized sculptures of international artists. The 4 Lakes Art Hike invites you to discover and experience both the various pieces of art and several lakes. Enjoy these cultural initiatives of the Schmitten combining nature and the arts in a unique way!
