A unique piece of history: the return of the historic snow groomer

· Winter

What began in 1969 has been meticulously restored with passion and technical mastery: After years of dedicated work, the Kässbohrer snow groomer has triumphantly returned to the Schmittenhöhe, boasting renewed splendour and a remarkable history. We’ve gathered all the details for you – complete with captivating background stories and fascinating insights.

From decommissioned snow groomer to restored masterpiece

How did it all begin? Built in 1969, the Kässbohrer snow groomer was originally part of the Schmittenhöhebahn AG fleet. Over the years, it passed into the hands of a mountain hut owner – and then seemed to fade into obscurity. That is, until Ingo Dürlinger, Head of Mountain Railways, Pistes, and Vehicle Fleet, sparked its revival. This marked the start of the ambitious snow groomer project.

Spare parts were scarce, technical documents long lost, and expert knowledge had dwindled. Yet, our dedicated workshop team eagerly took on the challenge!

Snow groomer in progress: screwing, welding, tinkering

A simple idea blossomed into a long-term project – and an iconic one at that. The entire Schmittenhöhe snow groomer workshop team rallied behind the task, fabricating numerous components in-house and restoring others with meticulous attention to detail. Every bolt, seal, and weld seam is its own piece of history.

After more than two years of dedicated effort, December 2024 marked the triumphant revival of the snow groomer – a shining testament to what craftsmanship and passion can accomplish.

The Kässbohrer snow groomer as an exhibit

The snow groomer may have a storied past, but its future shines even brighter. For now, it remains safely housed within the halls of Schmittenhöhebahn AG, yet the vision is clear: to showcase this beautifully restored vehicle as a powerful symbol of sustainability, craftsmanship, and connection to the region.

As for when and where it will make its public debut? Stay tuned – exciting announcements will follow!

Technology meets team spirit: behind the scenes at our workshop

Did you know that there are up to 20 snow groomers on the Schmittenhöhe? During peak season, as many as 16 vehicles are in daily use. A team of five highly skilled mechanics, brimming with experience and expertise, ensures all machinery is well-maintained.

By the way: Even in the summer, heavy equipment is used on the Schmittenhöhe, with two vehicles dedicated to transport and mowing tasks while the rest undergo comprehensive overhauls. With such dedication, there’s never a moment of standstill!

Sustainable snow grooming: driving into the future

Our vintage snow groomer stands as a powerful symbol of a broader commitment to environmental responsibility. Sustainability lies at the heart of our daily operations, all contributing to a greener Schmitten.

  • Precise snow depth measurements help conserve water and energy.
  • The use of HVO fuel reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 90%.
  • Diesel-electric snow groomers and smart fleet management further lower energy consumption.
  • Targeted driver training promotes eco-friendly driving practices.
  • Biodegradable hydraulic oils protect the soil and groundwater.
  • And through routine maintenance, we extend the lifespan of every piece of equipment – from the latest cutting-edge machines to our cherished 1969 model.
