The stunning scenic views of the Schmittenhöhe certainly make this mountain a household term among summer holiday guests. But are you familiar with its neighbouring summit, the Maurerkogel, too? It might not be quite as well-known, but it attracts hikers of all ages with equally stunning 360-degree views.
A hiking route to the Maurerkogel’s summit from Zell’s landmark mountain
Head out on a hike to the Schmittenhöhe’s neighbouring mountain! Along the ridge, you can walk up to the summit where you can enjoy its stunning 360-degree views: To the north, you’ll see the Kalkalpen range including the Wilder Kaiser, the Steinernes Meer range and the Hochkönig. To the south, you’ve got an un obstructed view of the Hohe Tauern range including the Großglockner, the Kitzsteinhorn and the Großvenediger. Treat yourself to ultimate summit joy – the ascent is well worth it, promise!

A medium-difficulty hike in Zell am See
As the saying goes: Work before pleasure. Even though you can’t really call this hike “work”, it still requires a certain amount of physical effort. The hiking route to the Maurerkogel is a medium-difficulty hike. A good level of endurance and sturdy footwear are recommended. Then, you should be able to comfortably hike this 11-kilometre route with 631 metres of elevation gain – even with your kids. Keep in mind that the hike will take you about four hours.
The route from the Schmittenhöhe
You want to go on a hike to the Maurerkogel? Great! Park your car and start your hike at the Schmittenhöhe cable car station. From the mountain station, follow the Pinzgauer Spaziergang trail to the fork in the trail labelled “Maurerkogel”. From that point on, the way to the summit is signposted. In fresh mountain air, you can hike towards the Maurerkogel’s stunning views. Via Hochsonnbergalm and the Pinzgauer Spaziergang trail, you can later return to the Schmittenhöhe.
Tip for a stop: At the rustic Hochsonnbergalm hut, traditional delicacies and homemade products are served. Berghotel Schmittenhöhe is another great choice for gourmets!
