Across from Zell am See, at about 1,350 metres above sea level, there’s a true paradise for all those craving a ski tour away from the perfectly groomed slopes of the Schmittenhöhe. The Ronachkopf in Thumersbach offers a varied tour for beginners and advanced ski tourers. Winter sports enthusiasts can also look forward to an incredible view of the Schmittenhöhe, the Hohe Tauern range and Zell am See.

Ronachkopf in Zell am See: the route

The starting point of your ski tour up Ronachkopf is the district of Thumersbach in Zell am See. Before coming into the town centre (from Zell am See), take a left onto Talstrasse and proceed for about 1.5 kilometres to the car park for ski tourers. 

From the car park, the route leads through lift lines, across steep terrain and across the slope. Once you’ve reached Enzian hut at 1,260 metres above sea level, the summit is within reach. You should definitely climb it while you’re there – a breath-taking view of Lake Zell, the Schmittenhöhe and the Maiskogel all the way over to the Hohe Tauern range awaits you!  

History of the ski-touring mountain

Until its shutdown in 1998, the Ronachkopf in Thumersbach was a popular mountain for skiing among locals as well as holiday guests. In 2014, the mountain was reopened as a ski-touring mountain. It offers ski tourers the possibility to practice their sport away from the slopes. 

Going ski touring one day. Skiing down the slopes of the Schmittenhöhe the next. And exploring the wintry hiking trials of Zell’s landmark mountain on yet another day. Whether it’s for a day trip, a weekend or a holiday. For families or for pleasure-seekers. The Schmitten is the perfect destination for all those who want to add some variety to their leisure time!
