Celebrating 20 years of MS Schmittenhöhe: a milestone in Lake Zell’s history

published on · Summer

Smart design, modern amenities and a welcoming atmosphere: Since 2005, MS Schmittenhöhe has captivated visitors and locals alike. As the flagship of the Lake Zell fleet, it has long outgrown its role as a simple mode of transport. After 20 years in service, it stands as one of the region’s landmarks. Join us in celebrating the MS Schmittenhöhe’s 20th anniversary – perhaps with a scenic boat tour on Lake Zell?

A closer look at MS Schmittenhöhe

Passenger service on Lake Zell began in 1870 but reached a new milestone on 12 May 2005 with the ceremonial launch of MS Schmittenhöhe. Built by the Lux shipyard in Niederkassel, this impressive passenger vessel has set new standards in local shipping. It measures 35 metres in length, with a 495 hp engine and a capacity of 255 passengers. Today, it epitomises comfort and offers extraordinary experiences, from scenic boat tours to memorable private party charters.

Overcoming initial challenges

Before its launch in 2005, MS Schmittenhöhe had to overcome several initial challenges, including a delayed delivery due to road construction work. First, the vessel made its way from Bonn down the Rhine to Heilbronn. From there, it was transported overland by special convoy all the way to Zell am See. The journey demanded millimetre precision through narrow village streets, even necessitating the removal of several traffic signs.

It was then launched into Lake Zell using a mobile slipway – despite strong winds and water barely a metre deep. With no steering capability, the vessel had to be carefully towed by MS Großglockner and guided back to the boathouse through a coordinated team effort. More than 50 helpers were involved, as MS Schmittenhöhe had arrived in two separate sections due to its sheer size. Final assembly was only possible on site, with completion taking place directly on the water. A remarkable beginning for what has become one of Zell am See’s most beloved panoramic ships!

The perfect ship, no matter the occasion

Did you know? MS Schmittenhöhe was originally delivered without its now-iconic sundeck. The third deck – complete with wooden flooring and awnings – was added later, thanks to the initiative of then-captain Toni Fürstauer. Today, the sundeck is one of the most popular places on board, offering extra space alongside the upper and lower decks for events of all kinds.

Whether you’re enjoying a relaxed scenic boat tour or tying the knot on deck, this ship ensures unforgettable moments on the water. And it’s not just a fantastic venue for private celebrations. MS Schmittenhöhe is also a top choice for business events. A corporate gathering with mountain views? Yes, please!

Equipped with state-of-the-art amenities like a screen, sound system and microphone for presentations, it offers an ideal setting for a wide range of occasions.

Navigating with precision

Piloting MS Schmittenhöhe is no easy task! Captains face real challenges, especially in windy conditions, with unpredictable boat traffic, or when swimmers venture too close. Weighing in at around 200 tonnes, the ship takes roughly 20 seconds to come to a full stop, making foresight and precise navigation essential skills on every trip.

Good to know: For safety reasons, swimming is strictly prohibited within 100 metres of any shipping facility.

New behind the wheel: As of May 2025, Isabella Zeinzinger has joined the captain’s team and is currently the only woman licensed to navigate Lake Zell.
