Disc golf on the Schmittenhöhe

Exploring Zell’s landmark mountain on a playful hike

A hike that combines sports and play? It might sound unusual but the Schmitten has got it on its list of activities to do – in the form of disc golf. Hike from target to target through the breath-taking scenery of the Pinzgau. The regular stops for throwing your disc ensure fun and action for all ages. (Our recommendation 10 years)

Disc golf – an exceptional Schmitten experience

As the name suggests: Like standard golf, disc golf is played on a green lawn. You also need to complete a number of holes with as few strokes – or in this case: throws – as possible. The target, however, is not an actual hole but a basket. And instead of golf balls, you throw a disc (resembling a frisbee) across the course. That’s where the name “disc golf” comes from.

Be it golf or disc golf: Both require endurance, focus and patience! Sounds like a holiday activity your family would enjoy? Then go ahead and try it …

The Disc golf course in Zell am See

18 targets across a distance of 3.5 kilometres await you on the disc golf course up on the Schmitten. The downhill course promises fun, leisurely hiking and stunning panoramic views of Lake Zell and the surrounding mountains. You start at 1,850 metres above sea level at the Sonnkogel mountain station. From there, you play your way down – target by target – to the Sonnenalm at 1,400 metres.

By the way: The length of the shortest hole from tee to pin is 30 metres and the longest one is 160 metres. The par is at 57. Find out how many throws you need …

Here’s how much Disc golf on the Schmitten will cost you

You’ve got a valid cable car ticket? Great! It gives you access to the disc golf course for free. All you need is a frisbee. Disc golf discs are available against a deposit of EUR 10 per disc either at the mountain station of the Sonnkogelbahn. (Please note: there is no ATM at the mountain station.) If you return your discs at the valley station of the Sonnkogelbahn you will get your deposit back.

Schmitten-Discgolf: Plan

Basic rules

Consider hikers, other players, animals, plants, trees, buildings and all other facilities while playing.

Make sure nothing and nobody is crossing the flight path of your dic before (!) you throw.

Start your first throw at the tee. Continue from where your disc lands until you reach the hole.

The player who needed the fewest throws at the previous hole, is first to throw at the next tee.

After throwing off at the tee, the player whose disc is the furthest from the hole continues, even if he needs a few more throws than the others.

Take note of how many throws you needed to get to the hole and continue to the next one. Add all your throws after the last hole. The player with the fewest throws is the winner.
