published on · Summer

Schmittenhöhe in Zell am See and senior travellers? A perfect match! State-of-the-art cable car technology ensures barrier-free, safe and comfortable access to the most stunning viewpoints on the sunny side of the Alps – from gentle walking trails to delightful culinary experiences.

A gentle journey to grand vistas

The ascent of Zell’s landmark mountain is all about comfort and enjoyment. Barrier-free cable cars facilitate smooth boarding and exiting, making the journey effortless. At the top, the ‘Kaiserblick’ panoramic platform awaits – fully accessible with no stairs or steep climbs. And the best part? The stunning view of more than 30 three-thousand-metre peaks, including Großglockner and Dachstein, plus Lake Zell and the picturesque town of Zell am See below.

Adding a touch of history: The platform pays tribute to Emperor Franz Joseph I, who followed in the footsteps of Empress Elisabeth with his own visit to the Schmittenhöhe.

Trails that tell a story

Energetic seniors with a love of movement will find plenty to enjoy on the Schmittenhöhe:

  • Sisi Trail: In just 30 minutes, you can walk around the summit of Zell’s landmark mountain, following the trail of Empress Elisabeth, who cherished the sunrises there. This gentle loop begins and ends at Elisabeth Chapel – a charming highlight in its own right.
  • High-Altitude Promenade: Connecting Sonnkogel and Schmittenhöhe, this scenic trail blends panoramic views with art installations and insights into the region’s flora and fauna. Inviting benches are perfect for restful breaks along the way, while the Salersbachköpfl viewpoint delivers sweeping Alpine vistas.

Culinary highlights on the Schmittenhöhe

No excursion is complete without a well-earned stop to enjoy some local culinary delights. Luckily, the Schmittenhöhe is home to numerous mountain huts and restaurants that serve up delicious regional cuisine. Popular options include Sonnkogel Restaurant, Berghotel Schmittenhöhe, and the stylish AreitLounge.

Insider tip: All three are located close to the mountain station and offer largely barrier-free access. At the Berghotel Schmittenhöhe’s sundeck, guests can treat themselves to classic Austrian dishes while taking in scenic mountain views – a perfect finale to a relaxing day in the Alps.

Boat tours on Lake Zell

In addition to the region’s majestic mountains, Lake Zell promises wonderful moments by the water for seniors and anyone who enjoys a gentler pace. And while you’re there, why not take a scenic boat tour?

Two of our favourites:

  • MS Schmittenhöhe: The ship offers barrier-free access for effortless boarding. Comfortable, covered seating and excellent onboard catering ensure a relaxing journey. Guests can, for example, savour coffee and cake while taking in views of the Alps, glacier, and the charming old town of Zell am See.
  • MS Großglockner: With frequent departures, this ship makes spontaneous lake crossings easy. The perfect choice for a leisurely stroll along the lakeside.

Schmitten bonus: Every vessel in Zell’s fleet offers a smooth journey paired with stunning scenic views of the surrounding landscape.
